Sometimes, I simply enjoy reeling people into playing a delightful indie, and Dredge⌠well, Dredge is one of those times. Itâs a fishing game, yes, but itâs one that hides a Lovecraftian selection of horrors beneath the surface of what, at first, seems fairly tame. If youâre not quite ready for the sheer panic of the best horror games but still want something with spooky vibes, Dredge is what youâre looking for, and right now, itâs cheaper than ever.
As someone who doesnât like the idea of fishing, it surprised me that Dredge ended up becoming one of my favorite indie games. Thatâs helped by the fact that itâs not really about fishing, at least not in the traditional sense. Instead, itâs about making your boat better with your spoils and eventually finding the courage to head out at night. And trust me, youâll want to brave it.
At the beginning, going out in the dark is a good way to lose. As you experience the story of this interesting world, youâll inevitably find ways to make trips that were once too dangerous, while also gaining the ability to travel farther and visit different towns. Even during the day, there are still risks, but nothing compares to the horrors youâll encounter once the sun goes down.
The more you let your panic rise, the more likely you are to see deadly creatures, like a phantom shark or a giant crab disguised as a shipwreck. There have been plenty of times when Iâve driven my little ship as fast as possible to avoid enemies, and in reality, the tension and panic rushing through my body have been surprisingly high, considering Iâm used to playing horror games and watching scary movies.
Dredge is one of those indies that, if youâre even somewhat intrigued by the premise, you need to give it a try. There are very few indiesâor games in generalâthat manage to blend something Iâd find truly boring with a world that is genuinely interesting, then somehow make the two fit together. Dredge is a truly solid experience, and while the opening is a little slow, itâs well worth getting into⌠especially if you can find it on deal.
Fortunately, that time has come. Right now, you can get a Steam key for Dredge for just $8.87 / ÂŁ7.80 at Fanatical. Thatâs 65% off the listed price and lower than Steam has ever had the game, so youâre getting it at a great time. Just make sure you dim the lightsâor turn them off completelyâput those headphones on, and get immersed.
Itâs almost a cozy experience, if not for the eldritch horrors.
