Thereās nothing like a good slasher around the best time of the year. Iām talking about the Halloween festivities, of course, and the Halloween game comes at a perfect time, bringing the 1v4 asymmetrical experience found in Dead by Daylight or the gone-but-not-forgotten Friday the 13th to the residents of Haddonfield. If you want to get a screaming good deal, the new Halloween adaptation already has a discount worthy of the slasher icon at launch.
Itās hard to describe what makes asymmetrical experiences like this some of the best horror games, but Iāll take a stab at it. Whereas most horror gamesāwhich I adore as a genre, may I addāhave predetermined situations, when the monster chasing you is another player, all bets are off. That makes every scare feel distinct, and as the fear of seeing the same scares wears off, games like Halloween thrive on randomness.
There are two halves to the game, and weāll start with becoming Michael Myers himself. In both the single-player mode and the ā1ā part of 1v4 multiplayer action, you play as the force of evil himself. That means you have access to some truly brutal kills, abilities that allow you to teleport under the cover of darkness, and ways to put pressure on the civilians as they try to retaliate.
As a civilian, your job is to escort NPCs to safety before fighting back and contacting the police, all while trying to survive the killerās massacre. Of course, you have your own ways to retaliate, such as makeshift weapons, but Myers cannot be killed. He can only be knocked down or captured by police.
Admittedly, Iām not very good at being Michael Myers. Perhaps I donāt have that killer instinct, but I fumble at almost every chance. Iām about as proficient at being a slasher icon as Ghostface, and considering whoever wears that mask seems to have feet made of ice, even I manage to be clumsier. I still have fun, of course, but I definitely need to work on my approach to being Myers. At least the story mode gives me some practice, and you know what they say about being a serial killerāpractice makes perfect. You can read more about the game in our Halloween review.
If youāre looking to have the fright of your life, you can grab Halloween for just $32 / Ā£28.60 at Fanatical, a 20% discount off the listed price right at launch. Thatās a Steam key, so you can add it to your Steam library and play it as you usually would with your PC games.
Donāt wait around: You want to make sure you can have a killer time before the Halloween period is over.
