In a year when Elden Ring took the gaming industry by storm and the release of Splatoon 3 ate up all of my time, you’d probably be surprised to know that one of my standouts was Neon White. It’s not just one of the best indie games I’ve ever played, but it’s also a top-tier FPS with speedrunning DNA, alongside slick art design and a cheesy yet brilliant narrative filled with excellent characters. It’s a game I personally recommend time and time again, and right now, it could be yours for just a fraction of the list price – but only for a day.

You play as the titular character, who awakens in Heaven alongside other sinners who have been chosen to take part in a competition - the Ten Days of Judgment. Your job is to cull demons from the pearly white realm above in order to win a mechanical halo that grants a year’s stay in Heaven. However, there are other ‘Neons’ taking part, and the previous winner - Neon Green - proves particularly tough. So, it’s up to you to complete various stages in the hope of securing your spot in Heaven.

Instead of using guns, you collect and use cards, with each level offering a variety of options to help you defeat the pesky dwellers from Hell who have broken into Heaven. It adds a layer of strategy to each run, and with mystery items to find, there’s an emphasis on messing with the order you receive cards in to secure hidden items while also keeping your time down. The faster you are, the higher you place on the leaderboard, and the higher your final score, too.

I love Neon White because it’s just such a unique experience. The quick pace of each level makes replays easy to sink time into because it never asks too much of you. In fact, you don’t need to keep replaying in the hopes of beating your own time, but it makes you want to, so much so that even after rolling credits years ago, I still regularly play it to see if I can beat my old times.

The speedrunning aspect has an almost puzzle-like layer on top, keeping every single stage interesting, even when it uses familiar mechanics from previous levels. It also helps that the characters remain interesting as you play through, keeping the narrative rolling even as you simply beat your current best times.

Even years later, after playing some absolute bangers, Neon White is firmly in my brain. I remember the joy of playing through each level and the hours spent trying to beat each and every one as fast as possible. It’s an underplayed gem, one that more people need to enjoy, and you can get it for 69% off at Fanatical right now. But you only have 24 hours, so make sure you’re quick.
